Non-invasive compressed air metering

Problem

Siemens Energy required a comprehensive process measurement system to acquire compressed air flow rates on two 8” supply lines at an automotive OEM. Due to the productive environment in automotive manufacturing, a full shutdown of main compressed air supply lines needed to be avoided at all costs when installing the in-line air flow meter system. Additionally, a real-time cloud data dashboard was required to enable automated remote monitoring, allowing the Siemens engineering team to avoid daily engineering team site visits involving manual data recording.

Solution

Novum built two standard PROMEA systems which integrated Keyence’s clamp-on air flow meters to capture data non-invasively and send in real-time to a remotely accessible dashboard. PROMEA continuously acquires air flow data and data integrity insights from Keyence sensors, then aggregates and pushes them at selected time intervals to an AWS SQL database for further analysis. Novum’s PROMEA system provided a full, turn-key solution to Siemens’ application needs with zero customer downtime, and provided real-time, remote data accessibility for the engineering team. Installation of sensors and full system data validation required only 5 hours of on-site time, providing a true rapidly deployable process measurement system.

  • Developed a distributed cellular PROMEA solution for acquiring data at multiple locations within automotive manufacturers’ facility and pushing data to cloud infrastructure

  • Incorporated Sierra Wireless industrial cellular router to provide cloud connectivity without requiring a connection to end customer’s network

  • Integrated Phoenix Contact’s battery backup system to perform safe shutdown of PROMEA controllers in case of power outages

  • Custom PROMEA software developed utilizing LabVIEW & DQMH architecture running on OnLogic’s rugged industrial PC

  • Utilized Banner Engineering wireless ethernet modules to transmit Modbus communication packets from PROMEA server through heavy machinery to PROMEA client +500 ft away

  • Efficient data dashboards were created using Grafana environment and connected to AWS sql database
